GAME-BASED LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE OF THE GRADE 6 LEARNERS IN MATHEMATICS: AN INTERVENTION PLAN

Read

Abstract

Game-based learning is considered as one of the effective approaches in teaching particularly in mathematics in which most learners found it less interesting and a bit difficult compared to other learning areas. Thus, this study explored on the extent of efficacy of game-based learning as perceived by the learners and the performance of the grade six learners in mathematics as to self- management skills, openness to learning opportunities, and initiative and independent learning in relation to Rapid Mathematics Assessment ( RMA) BOSY and EOSY results. It also explored on the profile of the teachers in terms of highest educational attainment, number of years in teaching, and relevant trainings attended. Using a descriptive method of research, the study’s findings indicated that there was a significant improvement in learners’ performance in the EOSY result of RMA. Likewise, it was found out that the extent of efficacy of game-based learning and the performance of the grade six learners in mathematics had a significant relationship. However, in spite of the significant relationship between the two variables, there were games literacy, and teachers ‘incognizance of the game-based learning activities. Hence, an intervention plan was proposed to strengthen the utilization of game-based learning in teaching mathematics concepts to increase learners’ engagement which later on affecting their performance.
