Abstract
Differentiated instruction played an important role for the success in teaching mathematics in today’s educational setting. This study explored the differentiated instruction approach and mathematics achievement of grade 5 learners that aimed to create an action plan that would maximize the application of differentiated instruction in teaching-learning process. In specific, this study also sought to determine the profile of the teachers in their highest educational attainment, teaching experience, number of relevant trainings attended, and strategies adapted; and the profile of the learners in terms of their sex, combined family monthly income, and mathematics grade for the third quarter.
Likewise, it explored the degree of effectiveness of differentiated instruction approach as perceived by the respondents as to connecting prior knowledge, considering learners’ pace, and learning experience. Utilizing a descriptive method of research, the statistical treatments such as frequency counts and simple percentage, weighted mean, t-test, and Chi square were utilized. Results of the study showed further that the perceptions of the teachers and learners on the degree of effectiveness of differentiated instruction approach is significant. Moreover, findings revealed that the degree of effectiveness of differentiated instruction is statistically significant to the mathematics achievement of the learners. Despite its significance, there were challenges that hindered the development of mathematics achievement such as teachers faced challenges in applying differentiated instruction in the classroom on poor internet connectivity, classroom management issue, and learners’ attitude towards learning. Hence, an action plan was proposed to address these gaps.
